When your twins are teething, nighttime is rougher than usual! When it came to my twins teething, here are the things that helped throughout the day and at night.
Teething Twins
I can attest that having one child teething is bad enough (I had a singleton first), and that teething twins is an incredibly challenging time! Two babies who need extra cuddles, two babies crying in pain, two babies with excessive drooling, all leading to sleepless nights for the whole family.
At the first signs of teething, whether that be excessive drooling, pain, extra grumpiness, or not wanting to eat/drink milk, you’ll want to make sure that you have these teething home remedies handy.
Teething tends to start around 4 months of age and 7 months of age. Of course, if your twins are preemies, that time may vary.
My identical twins were born a month early and one of my twins started teething when he was just 3-1/2 months old, so being born early doesn’t always mean they won’t teethe early. Oddly enough, the other twin started losing teeth first.
Damp Washcloth
Using a clean, damp washcloth with cool water is a simple thing to have handy for your babies to gnaw on when they’re in the teething process. Wet washcloths are a basic home remedy that anyone will have on hand.
Be sure to always supervise your baby while they have a washcloth so they don’t choke on it or something of that sort. Though it’s tempting to want to keep the washcloth cool, DON’T put an ice cubes in it. That’s a huge choking hazard.
Just a cold damp washcloth can help.
If you don’t have washcloths on hand, here is a pack of baby washcloths!
Damp Washcloth + You
If you want to add something extra you can always use a clean finger to put in the damp washcloth and let your baby chew on it. You can also apply gentle pressure to their sore gums. You can also provide a cooling gum massage.
Basically, you become part of a teething toy.
While you’re acting as a teething toy, it’s neat to be able to feel around a bit on their gums to see where those first teeth are coming in. Typically, they start with the front bottom teeth but not always.
Camilia Drops
One of our favorite natural teething remedies are Camilia Teething Drops. These come in handy since it’s no longer recommended to use any pain relievers or numbing agents as they aren’t safe.
Camilia teething drops are homeopathic medicine, not pain relievers. It doesn’t contain any flavors, dyes, sugar, or preservatives. It’s chamomile and plant-based and it actually works well!
At first, I was skeptical, but my chiropractor and our pediatric dentist recommended them and they’ve worked well for our 3 kids.
After their bedtime routine, we would put one dropper into baby’s mouth and then within 15 minutes use another dropper, as the dosage instructions indicate. We’d do the same for the other twin if they were teething at the same time. Which sometimes they did, sometimes they didn’t.
This helped immensely with this painful experience they had to go through and they would be soothed within minutes of the second dose. It was really quite neat to see something so natural actually work!
We used these throughout the day to help them with their pain and tender gums as well as at night time.
We had this on hand for years between our oldest who was 2 when our twins were born and of course for our twins. There was always a box of these in our pantry and it wasn’t until our twins were 3 years old I finally got rid of them. Lol That just goes to show how well these worked and how I always wanted them on hand for any teething discomfort.
White Noise Machine
A white noise machine is a huge help anytime babies are trying to sleep and even more so when they’re teething. It may help distract them from their sore gums and lull them to sleep. With twins especially, it helps to have a white noise machine so one twin doesn’t wake the other! Even if they’re not in the same room! Our kids have each had a white noise machine in their rooms for years so they don’t hear each other overnight.
I’m also one of those people who has to sleep with a fan on right next to me so I figure they would like it too and they have! Of course, don’t have it too loud as you don’t want to damage their hearing. We’ve found even the lowest setting helps our kids sleep better, even while teething or during a sleep regression.
Consistent Bedtime Routine
It’s important, even while your twins are teething, that you should keep a consistent bedtime routine for your twins throughout the teething process. Just like for adults, keeping this routine helps their bodies start the natural process of preparing for sleep. The only thing we changed within our bedtime routine for our twins was to give them those Camilia drops but that didn’t take much time.
More Teething Help
Beyond the actual teething symptom relief of their sore gums, your twins will likely have excessive drooling while they’re getting new teeth. We found that having our twins wear these bandana drool bibs helped immensely with keeping their clothes at least relatively dry and lessened the drool rash on their chests.
Only have them wear these during the day while they are not sleeping.
These are thick enough they absorb much of the moisture and are great for them to wear while nursing or drinking bottles as well!
