What’s Great about Crafts for Kids Ages 5+

The best part about crafts for kids 5 and over is they’re old enough that you don’t have to worry as much about them putting things in their mouths so you can give them smaller items like beads and not be as concerned.

Still a good idea to supervise though, especially as they may need help with some activities.

These crafts have kept my twins occupied for much longer than workbooks or other activities!

Pony Beads for Bracelets

As a child I loved making bracelets, necklaces, and designs out of pony beads and when my oldest asked for some for his birthday I thought YAY!! He got a set for making animals out of pony beads and I promptly found him containers in which to organize the beads by color.

My twins also seemed interested so I got them some basic pony beads to make bracelets and they love them! I happened to pull out the beads on a morning that they were going to see one of their grandmas so each made her a bracelet as well as their great aunt who they’d be seeing as well.

When their big brother got up, he made bracelets for them as well.

A Quiet Activity

My boys are typically VERY active and VERY loud. This activity lead to them being quiet and focusing for at least an hour. I couldn’t believe it! They loved being able to make bracelets for family members and after that made bracelets for their stuffed animals.

Stringing beads on string

Pony Beads and Elastic String

My boys love rainbows right now so I got them the pony beads and elastic string below. The string does come in more neutral colors as well.

The pony beads come in two plastic cases divided by color which is completely awesome in my mind. Especially since the bead pet set my eldest got didn’t come with any organization which drove us nuts!

The pony beads kit does come with elastic string but I figured the rainbow elastic string would be extra fun so now we have both!

Pony Bead Pets

This is the set our 7 year old asked for that got us started with Pony Beads. Our kids are loving the bead pets but I’ve been needing to help them actually string the beads through. It’s pretty cool though that they’re able to easily lay it all out on top of the storage cases then I can just come in and finish it up.

I’m guessing my 7 year old will be able to string his bead pets soon but it’ll be a while until the twins can.

It’s really cool to have a set with everything in one and the design cards make it easy to pick out the beads you need for each bead pet, as it shows how many of each color is needed, how long to cut the string, and how to lay it out on top of the storage cases.

Bead pets with containers where we could lay out the beads as the cards indicated.

The only thing it doesn’t have is enough space to adequately organize all of the beads included. Luckily, we had a lot of small containers around that our son could use but if you get this for your kids, I’d suggest getting one of the bead containers below as well.

Bead Storage Containers

Especially if you get the Bead Pet kit above, you’ll want an additional storage container for the beads if you want to have them separated by color.

I suggest getting one like this where you can move the dividers around and also just need to open the top and have access to all the beads you’d like! The only downside is if it gets tipped it’s going to take a while to clean it all up and get it back in order.

3-Tier Stackable Storage Container

This 3-Tier stackable storage container works great for beads and other crafts that you want to separate yet keep in the same general area.

You can move the dividers to fit different items and can have the three layers separate when in use and then stacked together when not in use.

Fun with Foam

Another fun activity is using these foam stickers to decorate the 6 boards and whatever else you want to decorate. It’s easy for kids to use and do mainly on their own which is a plus for when I need to prep lunch or dinner.

There are three different sets: Under the Ocean, Amazing Animals, and Unicorns and Princesses.

Write and Wipe Activity Mats

Skillmatics has so many great things that we’re falling in love with lately. These Write and Wipe activity mats come in so many fun varieties! They include different variations of Search and Find, I Can Write, I can Spell, I can Count, I can Draw, and more!

The best part is you can use them over and over!

You can access them all from the link the button below will take you to!

Arts and Crafts Supplies Kit

With this kit, the opportunities are indeed endless! Not long ago we made rainbows out of pipe cleaners by just twisting them together which looks really cool. We also have made numerous birthday cards and other cards for people with these craft supplies as well as animals and anything we can think of.

Perler Beads/Fuse Beads

A HUGE hit this year, with our twins almost being 7 and our eldest 9, are Perler beads! I am honestly surprised at how much they love these things.

It takes a little more work from the parent once they’re done because you’ll need to use an iron or a Cricut Easy Press (that’s what I use) to melt the beads, but it’s pretty awesome.

My kids typically get bored of things pretty quickly but they each created a masterpiece out of Perler beads five days in a row one week and then went camping for a weekend and came back and wanted to do more! I seriously don’t think we’ve ever had anything else that has been this popular.

When fusing the beads together, heat up the iron then put a piece of parchment paper on top of the design, between the design and the iron. Apply heat for 15 seconds then see how well it’s all melting. Typically I need to do a minute or so for each design but I take it slow. Then I flip it over and do the same on the other side with parchment paper as well.
