Why Remento?
If you want to help your children remember their mom forever, or especially a grandparent, give the gift of Remento Memory Books.
Remento makes it easy to turn someone’s life stories into a beautiful hardcover book without any writing on their part!
You just purchase the membership, sign them up, and they have a year of guided prompts sent to their email or via text, where they record themselves answering the weekly prompts.
These original recordings get automatically added to their keepsake book, which you will receive at the end of the year.
No complex software, no typing, no sign-ins, just reply to the text or email with a quick video.
The hardcover book that is created at the end of the year based on all their answers, not only has their answers in text form, along with photos, but also has QR codes where you can scan and see their videos!!
I wish I knew of this back when my mom was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease when she was 59. This would have been so great to have her do so we could have more memories with her we could treasure forever. We gave her a book she could write in, before things got too bad, but writing took a lot of work, so she didn’t complete most of it. If we had Remento, it would have gone much better!
What’s Included
When you purchase a Remento memory book, here is what is included:
- 1 year of unlimited prompts
- 1 beautiful hardcover book
- Lifetime access to all content, including original recordings
You can renew your membership to continue recording past one year.
Before we get started, here is a video from Remento about how it works.
Check Out Process
Step 1: When you go to the Remento site to purchase, you can select whether you’ll be telling the stories or a loved one. If you select a loved one, there is an extra step of where you’d like the delivery to be, since it’ll be someone other than you sharing their family stories.
For this example, I’m going to say that I’ll be telling the stories, as I have the opportunity to create a book for my kids, for free from Remento.
Due to my mom being diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease at age 59, and her noticing memory changes starting about 15 years earlier at age 46, I’m very cognisant that my time may be limited. I’m thankful to have the opportunity to share my story and history with my children, that they can cherish for years, and show their kids, just in case I meet the same fate as my mom.
Step 2: Enter your purchase details, your name, email, and phone number if you’d like to be able to create your book from your phone. Even with just email, if they open the email from their phone, they can easily complete the weekly prompts from their phone.
Step 3: You can select add-ons if interested.
- These include giving Remento to a second storyteller with a whole separate book. At the time that I completed this, I could do so for just $50, which is half off!
- You can add additional copies of the hardcover book if you’d like. One book is included with your purchase; additional copies are $60 or less, depending on how many you’d like printed.
- You can also add an e-book if you’d like.
- The last add-on opportunity is digitizing your old photos with Legacybox, Remento has a partnership with them to offer this great deal.
Note: you don’t have to do any of the upsells, they are all optional.
Step 4: Review your order and go to payment.
Step 5: Submit payment. Note: This is a membership that you can renew if you need more than a year to complete your book. Set a reminder on your phone to cancel the membership before you’re charged for the next year, if you don’t want to renew after one year.
Setting Up Your Project
Once you’re through the purchasing, you get to set up your new project!
Even if you’re having someone else such as a parent or grandparent, record their family history, you’ll be the one to set up the project.
1. Above is the image I saw after purchasing. I get to set up the first weekly prompts, which will just take a couple of minutes. Note: if you have any questions along the way, you can always contact Remento’s customer support. On this page, they even have a handy link at the bottom of the page to contact them if needed.
When I clicked “Pick your first prompt,” it sent me an email link to get started. I went to my inbox and clicked on it to keep going.
2. Next, you’ll get to choose the questions that they’ll answer later. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all situation. Remento lets you give input on what family stories you want them to share with future generations.
3. Then, you’ll see that you can upload photos to spark stories. These photos can be added before or after adding new stories. You, or they, can upload photos via a phone’s camera roll, computer, or external services such as Facebook, Dropbox, Google Drive, and Instagram!
4. You can even invite family members or friends to collaborate. If you invite others to collaborate, those people can add questions, view stories shared with them, and send messages to help them along the way and make it more meaningful. You can add unlimited collaborators so everyone can be part of this experience.
5. If you’re making this book for yourself, you’ll then be shown that you will soon be recording your story. If you’re setting this up for someone else, you may see a different page. You, and they, can always review and edit the written versions of stories later if there is anything that anyone wants to change.
6. Add Prompts: You’ll select the “add prompts” button to start adding the prompts you’d like them to complete. You can choose whether they want to start with uploading photos or start with questions. I chose to start with questions.
7. Review and add your questions: You will be taken to a list of questions that are pre-selected. You need to select at least three prompts, which are the first ones they’ll receive, though you can select as many as you’d like.
Note: take a good look at these. They had some pre-selected questions that are well before my time as I’m a 39-year-old completing this, such as where were you when humans walked on the moon. I wasn’t born yet, but the generation before me, was, which are typically who is completing this. So be sure to look closely if you’re younger.
I also have a bit of a traumatic past, but I don’t want this to be a downer of a book. I’m keeping that in mind as I select the first several questions I’ll be answering.
I ended up choosing 30 of the 38 prompts that were available, knowing that I can always add my own prompts in the future.
8. Order Prompts: I was able to drag and drop the order of the prompts into a way that either made the most sense or that I want to answer them in. There is an option to edit them later as well. I decided to order mine in chronological order.
9. Pick how often and when you want them to receive the prompts. This is great because even as a stay-at-home mom, there are times when I am more able to sit down and tell a story than others. Obviously, with people who have full-time jobs, this is the case as well. Honestly, I’m not sure if this is something you do as the person who set up the account, or the person completing the book. Either way, consider their schedule and decide when they’d like to have their prompts delivered. It doesn’t mean you have to do them right then, but it is helpful to be able to set this. If you don’t want to tell them ahead of time about this, it’s ok, just pick a time and they can adjust these settings later. I chose Wednesdays at 3pm CST, as that’s typically when I have a few minutes to myself.
10. Pick how you’d like their story to be transcribed. Do you want it to be a first-person story, a third-person story, or a cleaned transcript, which will be the original transcription with filler words removed. The first and third person include the Remento AI writing assistant, which will generate a story from the original transcription. Note that no matter what you pick here, you can change it in the future if you want to.
I’m going to try out the first-person story with the AI assistant. I’m curious to see what that’s like.
11. Invite collaborators: If you want to invite collaborators, you can do so now via email or private link. If you choose to add family and friends to the book, those family and friends will receive stories as they’re recorded. The collaborators can also send reactions and comments directly to the storyteller. This could be really motivating to help the storyteller keep telling their stories.
Since it’s just me doing this, I’m going to skip that step for now.
12. Welcome video! Once I said skip, I was taken to a screen where there is a welcome video from the CEO of Remento.
Remento Dashboard
From the dashboard, you can see it all! You can look at stories to see what has already been submitted. For me, nothing at the moment as I’m just starting out.
In Prompts, you can see which prompts are going to be sent, when they’ll be sent, and even add your own prompts if you’d like. You can also add a photo from here, before you’re even sent the prompt, if you’d like.
Project Settings: You can adjust the settings that were set up earlier, if you’d like to.
Order Books: In the order book tab, you can customize the book cover, including adding photos, a color, title, and subtitle. Once the book is done being recorded, you can go through and review stories, preview the book, see order details, and finalize it before it ships to you. You have ultimate control over how the book looks, which is great!
Overall Experience
This has already surpassed my expectations. It’s amazing how detailed the prompts are, how easy it is to set everything up, and how much I’m able to customize the storyteller’s book the way I want to. This truly makes it something the whole family will enjoy for years to come.
I’m excited to get started sharing my personal stories when the prompts come to my email, to experience it firsthand. I love that I can upload unlimited photos, that there are video recordings and audio recording, as well as unlimited stories! I’m sure I’m going to add some of my own prompts, especially to include more family stories about my mom, since my kids didn’t get to know her.
It’s really awesome to have not only a beautiful hardcover book when this is all done, but also a digital archive of everything. We can even download recordings, photos, and written stories from their website at any time if we want a backup.
I’m excited to see the final product once I’m done answering the prompts, and customizing the final copy!
A Meaningful Gift
If you’re looking to give a meaningful gift this year, give the gift of Remento. You’ll be showing your loved one that you care about their stories and help them take a walk down memory lane as they answer the prompts. All they need is an email address and a phone or computer. I truly think this is the best choice when it comes to preserving family memories for a lifetime.
Being able to actually hear original recordings of your loved one’s voice, in addition to the beautiful hardcover book, is an amazing feature.
